Nope, that would make all callers have to deal with a pointer or a NULL,
or an error value encorporated in a pointer.

Then just test for NULL, there's nothing preventing that, right?

Also, the only way probe can fail is if the probe you passed into the
call fails.  Or if you picked a name that is already in the system, both
of which you have full control over.
