I suggest not using hit_idx at all, and no lock either.

for (i = 0; i < ROLLOVER_HLEN; i++)
      if (po->rollover->history[i] == rxhash)
              count++;

po->rollover->history[prandom_u32() % ROLLOVER_HLEN] = rxhash;
